Guitar, the six strings Western medium with a fretted finger board, makes a welcome addition to the varied repertory of Indian musical instrument. But in its Indian version, Guitar is fitted with three bronze strings in a place of brass strings in the lower octave to secure a wider range of expressiveness. The credit for adapting Guitar to the needs of melodic expression goes to young Brijbhushan Kabra. He has added chikari as a new string to lend continuity to the drone. Besides, a steel bar is employed to play the instrument. The result is that a variety of tonal and rhythmic patterns can be conjured from an instrument with a relatively limited range.
